Macbeth"s tragic element is his excessive ambition, ignoring his time and place, and trying to create his new time, future. Ambition can be seen a type of universalized idea in literature and Shakespeare demonstrates this idea through the tragic hero Macbeth. Macbeth"s hope and expectation to become King of Scotland is a human desire. The direst cause of his tragedy is the prophecy that three witches, supernatural beings, told him on returning to his own country. They represent the past, present, and future. Macbeth has a severe and tragic flaw which is encouraged by these prophecies His tragic flaw is the fact that he tries to consider only his future time ignoring his past and present time. So his action and his tragic flaw lead to the murder of king Duncan. However, time itself is the ultimate arbiter of justice, and comprehends in itself all the binding laws against which Macbeth rebels. The justice of present time is not on his side. Macbeth, as king of Scotland, has experienced a painful and lonesome life since Duncan"s death. In the end he dies saying that he has wasted his life and time, and has lived a useless and insignificant life In conclusion, Macbeth"s subjective experience of time dislocates the natural order. He forces his time on the human world in two ways: while he accelerates his time of future by hastening Duncan"s death, he stops its natural unfolding by trying to prevent the succession of Banquo"s progeny.
