초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptual differences amongst the various types of tourism related businesses during the significant 2015 downturn in Jeju’s tourism. During 2015, the number of tourists visiting Jeju decreased by between 40 to 50%. The tourism crisis is mainly attributed to public health concerns regarding the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak.
Survey data was collected from 273 local respondents, working in tourism related businesses. The data was then analyzed to determine the existence of perceptual differences amongst the various tourism related businesses.
The findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, perceptual differences were found to exist between the different types of tourism related businesses. Second, the level of perception regarding the tourism crisis was higher in the public sector than the private sector.
The results suggest that perceptual differences amongst tourism related businesses should be taken into consideration while preparing preventative or recovery measures in response to a tourism crisis. In addition, the local government should make common cause with the private sector to deal with a significant downturn in tourism or other tourism crisis.
