The purpose of this study was to examine whether there are differences in the preparation for transition from kindergarten to elementary school and parents’perceptions regarding school readiness depending on types of institution. The subjects of the study were 237 parents whose 5-year-old children were attending kindergartens, day care centers or private centers. The results of the study showed that kindergarten is the most active institution for the transition to elementary school. On the other hand, those children who were attending private centers participated in the most extracurricular activities for transition to elementary school. In terms of parents’perceptions regarding school readiness, those who were sending their children to private centers tended to think that their institutions did not teach basic life skills to their children, which is one of the factors perceived to influence their children’s readiness for school. The results imply that practices for transition to elementary school are necessary in any type of institution to prepare the children for school. In particular, private centers should include more preparation for basic life skills in their curricula.
