This paper is an attempt to get a more accurate assessment of the military strength and strategic deployment of the Joseon and Qing forces on February 16, 1637, when Ganghwa Island fell to the Qing army during the 1637 Manchu invasion of Joseon Korea.
The number of Joseon"s regular army soldiers stationed in the island was only around one thousand, or a few more than that number. And two Joseon naval fleets were stationed at the northern and southern mouths of Yeomha Waterway 鹽河水路: the number of warships at the north was seven; that of warships at the south was at least twenty-seven. The Ganghwa castle and the northeastern coastal area were left defenseless, as most of the warships and almost all the army soldiers were concentrated around the southeastern coast of the island. This article argues that this concentration of Joseon’s military forces can be understood as a reasonable strategic choice. Given limited military resources, Joseon’s military leaders in Ganghwa must have taken advantage of the fact that the only port leading to the island during the cold winter was located near the southern mouth of the Waterway.
When it comes to the Qing troops mobilized for the landing operation, there were 3,200∼3,300 infantry soldiers and forty-four small ferryboats under the command of Dorgon and Dudu. These ferryboats were moved by punting, not by rowing, which made it possible for the Qing troops to overcome rapid tidal currents of the Yeomha Waterway. This article further discusses the role of hongyipao 紅夷砲, or “red barbarian cannon,” and suggests that its actual military effect in the operation should not be overemphasized.
