This study compared role norm appeal and traditional social norm appeal for their effectiveness in deterring binge drinking among Korean and U.S. college students. The predictions were examined employing a 2 (U.S., Korea) × 3 (role norm, social norm, no-norm ‘personal safety’ control) factorial design (N US = 374, N KOR = 171), in which the role norm and the social norm appeal was manipulated by emphasizing the college students’ responsibility to their parents and to their community, respectively. In the no-norm control, personal safety was emphasized. Participant’s behavioral intention to avoid excessive drinking served as the major dependent variable. Results from a path analysis indicated that, across cultures, role norm appeal induces greater willingness to avoid binge drinking than social norm appeal by enhancing perceived propinquity of consequences and perceived risk. Across all three conditions, Korean students were more willing to avoid binge drinking than U.S. students.
