The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of importance and consistency of meaning in life on subjective well-being and depression using sample of 424 high school students(215 boys, 209 girls).
Importance and consistency of meaning in life, subjective well-being, and depression were evaluated by self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Cronbach"s alpha, t-test, Pearson"s correlations and stepwise multiple regression analyses. The results were as follows: First, there were significant differences in subjective well-being and depression as a function of gender. Second, most sub-factors for boys and two out of eight sub-factors for girls of importance of meaning in life were positively correlated with subjective well-being respectively. Moreover most sub-factors of consistency of meaning in life were positively correlated with subjective well-being for boys and girls. However five out of eight of importance of meaning in life and seven out of eight sub-factors of consistency of meaning in life were negatively correlated with depression for boys and girls respectively. Third, stepwise multiple regressions showed that some sub-factors of consistency of meaning in life have influenced subjective well-being for boys and girls respectively. In case of depression, some sub-factors of consistency of meaning and importance of meaning in life have influenced depression for boys. For girls, some sub-factor of consistency of meaning in life has influenced depression. These findings suggest that sub-factors of meaning in life correlated to subjective well-being and depression are very diverse, and they are different according to gender.
