This study explores the relationship between the law and horizon of expectation in the late of Joseon dynasty centered on the trials of chaste woman. When the ruling on an actual case in the late of Joseon Dynasty was not in contradiction with the people’s expectations, the case was seen as enjoyable with an element of entertainment factor added. However, this was not the case when there was a greater gap between the case and people’s expectations. Here, the story was presented in a different way from the actual case. Literature helps people recover from difficult memories of actual events and heals people’s scars by reconstructing the events through fictional factors. The factor that motivated it was, after all, the horizon of expectation. The horizon of expectation creates a new story.
This paper attempts to determine the meaning and meaning creation process through the stories of several women. It summarizes the aspect in three ways, as an aggregation respectively, of ideology, fact and fiction, and intrinsic truth respectively. As a result, it confirms that the events projected on Yadam did not distinguish between facts and fiction, but also spoke the truth that reproduces ordinary life in different forms. Dissatisfaction with the application of law and the people’s expectation worked differently, and the people rebuilt their stories in the way they expected.
