This study analyzes the reduction effect of accidents regarding the crash safety of KNCAP. In Korea, the assessment of full frontal crash safety was firstly introduced in 1999, while side crash safety assessment, whiplash assessment, offset frontal crash safety assessment, and side pole crash safety assessment were started in 2003, 2008, 2009 and 2010, respectively. Although the automobile safety assessment system has been known to contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents every year, there is a lack of latest research on quantitative estimation. This study estimates the difference in statistical reduction of accidents between the actual KNCAP vehicles and non-assessed vehicles, as well as the decrease in the number of fatalities after introducing the KNCAP system. First, the number of KNCAP vehicles was estimated based on the production volume of new cars and the volume of domestic end-of-life vehicles. Second, odds ratio analysis was performed on the reduction effect of actual accidents in KNCAP vehicles and non-assessed vehicles, and the result shows 56 % reduction in the number of deaths. A model for estimating the reduction of traffic accidents of KNCAP vehicles was developed based on two factors, and the result of the application reveals that the reduction in the number of deaths and injuries was 14,211 from 1999 to 2017. It is expected that the continuous use of these findings will contribute to the settlement of the KNCAP system and the improvement of the safety of vehicles.
