This paper theoretically explores the political economy perspectives on urban housing and urbanization, particularly focusing on the work of Castells and Harvey. From the political economy perspectives on urban housing and urbanization, it can be argued that the housing system is interconnected with the wider social system in the following important ways. First, housing is a commodity and a source of surplus value for certain forms of capital. Second, housing is part of the necessary consumption of workers and as such is an aspect of the reproduction of labor power. Third, the forms in which housing is provided are interlinked with the reproduction of the social relations of capitalism. Fourth, in so far as it is embedded in a system of contradictory forces, the housing system will be an arena for social class conflicts and a locus for various forms of state intervention. Several themes need to be clarified. First, the relationship between labor market processes and household consumption needs to be clarified in terms of their relevance to the reproduction of social relations. Second, more work is needed on the actual processes of residential differentiation through which social classes are segregated in space.
