This study has a purpose to prepare efficient learning method of Korean idiomatic expressions by choosing the basic idiomatic expressions and looking at the semantic transparency of Korean idiomatic expressions and differences by language for foreigners English and Chinese. In many previous studies, there has been a direct relationship between semantic transparency and Korean idiomatic expressions, there have been few empirical studies. In addition, there are no studies comparing differences between English and Chinese. The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference in the meaning of the Korean idiomatic expressions according to the semantic transparency and by language. This paper analyzed the semantic of Korean idiomatic expressions and difference by language through the analysis of variance. This study was conducted under the hypothesis that the semantic transparency of the idiomatic expressions influences the understanding of the meaning of idiomatic expressions and by language. The experiment divided the questionnaire of 30 questions and selected the idiomatic expressions corresponding to the sentence or the same meaning as the underlined idiomatic expressions. As a result, first, there was a difference according to the semantic transparency of idiomatic expression. Semi-transparency with high semantic transparency showed high correct answer rate, and semi-opaque and opaque had low correct answer rate. The results of this experiment did not show the differences of the idiomatic expressions by language in the analysis of variance, but showed a significant difference according to the correct answer rate per question. The hypothesis of this study is supported by the premise of previous studies that there will be distinct differences in understanding meanings according to semantic transparency.
