This article examines the issue of whether globalization has produced a convergence towards social democratic countries as a whole in the process towards European integration in the 1980s, 1990s and into the new century. In order to do this, we also need to explore the question of whether the European integration caused the economic slowdown in the context of the widening and deepening of the EU. Confronted with the neoliberal economic policy in the period of globalization, a major issue of debate in important academic circles has been the impact of the globalization on the ability of western developed capitalist countries to sustain their welfare states. It was assumed that the social democratic parties were compelled to move towards a more diminished social democracy. However, the nordic model of social democracy has proved that the political color of conventional European welfare governments has played a critical role in the states’response to the process towards globalization. For some period of time, the welfare state was more likely to be responsible for the slowdown of European economies. None the less, in economic context, the transformative capacity of European states may be still efficient and should not be overlooked. Until very recently financial capital on a global scale has undoubtedly raised serious concerns among neoliberal economists as well as revisionists. Given that we have found a problem with European economy, European model seems to be still economically competitive against Anglo-saxon model.
