This study analyzes the transnational practices of ethnic Koreans in southern Russia, and the effects of these practices on ethnic identity. Based upon field research in the Rostov region of Russia, this study identifies six typical transnational practices of Soviet Koreans: cross-national economic activities, immigrant organizations, seasonal migrant tenant farming, ethnic encounters in business, immigrant newspapers, and homeland support for cultural activities. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of transnational ties in reviving ethnic identity in members of the Korean diaspora. Through transnational practices, Korean ethnic identities long hidden at a subconscious level can be brought to the fore. This research additionally suggests the need for further study of various Korean diaspora groups overseas to confirm the reliability of the research conclusion.
