The paradigm shift in the humanities during the era of globalization has a strong relationship with the fundamental reflection on the all kinds of modern demarcations and boundaries. Post-modern humanities, such as post-structuralism, post-colonialism, various transnational discourses and post-human theories have demonstrated this well. For Russia it can be said that such a trans-boundary thinking is inherent in its civilization. From its beginning, Russian civilization has been ‘a culture of betweenness’ or ‘a sign of boundaries’. If western modernity heightened the image of boundary, then Russia had internalized itself through a trans-boundary moment. Such a unique understanding of boundary has been reflected in various Russian cultural theories during the first half of the twentieth century. These cultural theories include formalism through the philosophical anthropology of M. Bakhtin to the cultural semiotics of Y. Lotman. This study examines the above mentioned peculiarity of Russian perception of boundary by comparing cultural theories of Bakhtin and Lotman while focusing on their key concepts. The key concepts include double refletion/secondary modeling system, text as mnogogolosost' and mnogoplanovost', and boundary itself as an ambivalent coexistence1 of boundarizing and de-boundarizing moments.
