Workers’ self-management is considered to be the most progressive and active way of workers’ participation in management by contradicting the capitalist’s ownership of a company and encouraging the workers themselves to manage the company and take responsibility. However, workers’ self-managed companies inevitably meet dilemmas between private ownership and social ownership in the present capitalistic economic system. Most of the workers’ self-managed companies have been established by workers overtaking bankrupt firms given up by the owner. There have been various types of workers’ self-managed companies, but there is no such detailed information or data including their success or failure in business shown to public. Workers’ self-management system is often criticized or ignored due to its unrealistic characteristics which are incompatible in capitalistic economic system. Nevertheless, it is a means to save good quality jobs by workers’ overtaking and managing directly a bankrupt company as well as to save industrial democracy and to overcome alienation of labor which are the inherent motives. Therefore it is important to search a possible way to develop the system to be more suitable in Korean economy considering its positive effects. The example of ‘Dalgubul-Bus Co. Ltd.’ shows that workers’ management system could be more than successful in Korea if there is certain social interest and support by the government.
