This paper proposes that the suffix –key is a spell-out of a functional head dedicated for licensing a causee in expressing causation in Korean. This suffix is observed in such syntactic environments as periphrastic causatives, periphrastic “passives” and resultatives, raising a question as to why and how these syntactic structures have come to employ the same suffix, despite their interpretive differences. It is observed that periphrastic causatives, periphrastic “passives” and resultatives involve a caused event in their morphosyntactic and interpretive deployment. There exists a systematic correlation between the verbal suffix under consideration and the caused event interpretation. It is proposed that under semantic differences lies a common morphosyntactic piece which denotes a caused event/state and its head is spelled out as -key. The three syntactic structures share the same morphosyntactic structure and are contextual variations of denoting causation in Korean. The presence of -key in such varied syntactic environments is not an accident, but a natural consequence of the morphosyntax of causee at work.
