초록

Linerboard needs high compressive strength for manufacturing high performance corrugated board, inexpensive raw materials for lowering manufacturing cost, and high solid content after wet pressing for drying energy savings. Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is the least expensive papermaking raw material until now. However, addition of GCC to linerboard raw stock always lowers hydrogen bonding between wood fibers and thereby, lowers strength properties. We investigated the combined effect of large size calcium carbonate addition and high wet pressing pressure application on the properties of linerboard. The large size GCC, aragonite type precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and the fibers from medium density fiberboard (MDF) were used in the study. The smaller the size of GCC, the higher the solid content after pressing and the lower the strength properties of linerboard. Aragonite type calcium carbonate increased solid content and kept compressive strength. MDF fibers was only effective on increasing bulk. Further investigation of the aragonite calcium carbonate is recommended for elucidating its full potential for both lowering production cost and drying energy saving of linerboard production.
