Tsutsu is a Japanese conjunctions that can indicate that both the main and subordinate clauses are proceeding at the same time, as well as functioning as a converse adverb. Tsutsu is an expression with the same signification as Nagara, and it has been considered that their semantic characteristics are almost the same, the only difference from Nagara being stylistic. In this study, we analyzed the syntactic features of Tsutsu based on a major corpus (BCCWJ). The sentences were divided into “Adversative conjunction” and “Coordinating conjunction” based on the semantic relationship between the clause of Tsutsu and the main clause, and the characteristics of each classification were described by dividing them into “Continue,” “Maintenance of change results,” “Repeat behavior,” and “Perfect.” The overall characteristics of the corpus are as follows: 1. Certain verbs, such as psychological verbs (thinking verbs, feeling verbs), are frequently combined with Tsutsu. 2. Verbs that appear frequently in the clause of Nagara do not appear in the Tsutsu clause. 3. The case where the relationship between the Tsutsu clause and the main clause shows “Coordinating conjunction” accounts for about 77% of the total. 4. The aspectual meaning of Tsutsu syntax is often that of “Continue.”
