Strong interactions between planetary waves (PWs) and parameterized gravity waves (GWs) through barotropic/baroclinic instability in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) winter stratosphere have been identified. One interesting feature in the PW-GW interactions is a remarkable compensation between those wave forcings, which has been demonstrated from some previous studies based on the results of idealized global circulation model simulations. An important question is whether such compensation occurs in the real atmosphere. To answer this question, the compensating interaction between PWs and orographic GWs (OGWs) through instability are examined based on 32 years (1979-2010) CFSR reanalysis data in the NH winter (December-February) stratospheric layer of 20-1 hPa and 30-60°N, where major mountains exist.
