The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 24(4), 129-149. The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy beliefs and comprehension in English reading. A total of 219 Korean EFL middle school students completed the questionnaires on reading self-efficacy beliefs. To measure students’ reading comprehension, English scores of a province-run-achievement test were used. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between reading self-efficacy beliefs and reading comprehension. The dependent variable was reading comprehension, and the independent variable was reading self-efficacy beliefs with the subfactors of Initiative, Effort, Performance, and Persistence. The result of the study showed that two variables of Effort and Performance were significant to predict the variance in reading proficiency (b=0.241 and b=0.248, p<0.05, respectively). In addition, R2 was 0.343 (p<0.01). This means that 34.3.1% of variance of reading proficiency was accounted for by the linear combination of reading self-efficacy beliefs. These results imply that there is a strong relationship between reading self-efficacy beliefs and reading proficiency. Pedagogical implications based on the findings are discussed.
