The wave of global food riots in the 21st century is understood as involving food price spikes. This article views the food riot as a political response to the contradiction of the corporate food regime. The Food riots in developing countries placed the food question on main agendas of the international community. There are several factors driving the sharp global food prices. This paper argues that these factors represent the contradiction of food regime in an era of neoliberalism. There is an opinion that the concept of a ‘moral economy’ in European history has proved useful in attempting to describe and explain the social context of food riots. While being careful of similarities and differences between classical food riots and contemporary food riots, we have attempted to explore the political-economic context of contemporary food riots. The Food Riots and Social movement caused by the food crisis and food insecurity suggest that the current food system needs to be transformed to the new one which allows people to control over food policy.
