The way we understand and represent space is often political. Until now, research on the capital has mainly been approached from the perspective of urban functions, and has somewhat overlooked the meaning and role of the capital as a politics of space. In order to understand the meaning of the symbolic politics of the capital, it is necessary to look at the method of relocating the power structure and seeking national unity in terms of the interaction of space, subject, and power, and to understand how various political things are subsumed or resisted by such politics.
In this regard, the focus of this study is on the construction process of the capital Beijing in the modern China. Like the national anthem or national flag, the capital is one of the representations of a country and a place where the symbolic elements of the commemorative assets of a community, that is, the national memory, are embodied. In that sense, the capital Beijing corresponds to what Pierre Nora calls a ‘place of memory’.
Beijing, which was the capital of the empire for nearly 8 centuries before the modern era, is different from a city that has emerged as a new center of symbolic politics since modern times. capital Beijing is a space where the collective memory of the national community and the memory of the modern symbolic ideology work simultaneously. It is a real place condensing history that connects the past and the present. These two memories form a tense relationship between competition, conflict and cooperation according to variations in the ideology of government. In order to understand this relationship, it is necessary to examine how traditional memories are recalled and transformed in the process of reconstructing the space of Beijing as the capital of a socialist country, and how socialist memories are overlaid on them.
