Purpose: Due to the low birth rate in South Korea, obstetrics and gynecology hospitals are sharply decreasing. As a result, an alternative education method in maternity nursing practicums, such as virtual simulations, is needed. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience with virtual simulations and clinical practice in the delivery room among nursing students. Methods: In this qualitative study, 28 nursing students who experienced virtual simulations and maternity nursing practice participated in individual interviews between March and July 2021. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. A conventional content analysis method was used for the data analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in seven categories and 22 subcategories. Four categories were related to virtual simulation, “enforcing theoretical nursing knowledge”, “nursing where I take the lead”, “the gap between reality and virtual reality” and “experiencing patients with various cases”. Three categories were related to clinical practice: limited clinical learning environment, improving clinical competency through direct experience, and experiencing a nursing role. Conclusions: Virtual simulations enhanced students’ knowledge, whereas clinical nursing practicum strengthened their clinical competency. Therefore, considering the current educational situation, a practicum that combines virtual simulations and clinical practicums could be considered for quality education.
