This paper discusses the conflict between religious denominations in the period of the Great Plague of London of 1665-6. The plague of 1665-6 is remembered as the ‘last’ outbreak in Britain, but in addition to that, the outbreak has its own unique historical context. During the English civil wars and Oliver Cromwell’s reign in the mid-seventeenth century, the religious monopoly of the Church of England collapsed and Puritans prevailed. However, the Church of England returned with the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660. The 1662 Act of Uniformity outlawed worships which would not follow the Anglican ceremonies and prayer books. The clergymen who refused to accept the Act of Uniformity were deprived. Now Puritans became known as Nonconformists because they did not conform to the national church. This historical background provides a unique context for the Great Plague of London. The Christian worldview dominated the seventeenth century Europeans. For them, natural disasters such as plague meant God’s punishment. They wanted to find out the reason of the punishment. Who sinned? And what kinds of sins angered God? They thought the removal of the particular sins would mitigate God’s punishment. Anglicans and Nonconformists interpreted the disaster in a different way to each other. Anglican clergy considered Puritans in the civil war period to be rebels and insisted that God sent plague because Puritans killed Charles I and other innocent people. Anglicans also blamed Nonconformists for the national sin – schism. Nonconformists did not agree with this assertion. In their view the plague was caused by the fault of the ruling authorities. According to the dissenting polemicists, the government policy which prohibited the worship of Nonconformists who pursued pure faith provoked God’s wrath. They insisted that to end the plague the persecution of Nonconformists should be stopped. As such, the way of understanding the 1665 plague was influenced by the contemporary religious and political discourse.
