In Korea, algal bloom became an emerging environmental and social issue in the four major rivers after installation of 16 weirs though the Four Major Rivers Project (2010-2011). Korean government decided to open the gate in some of the weirs to mitigate the problem. As a result, the flow velocity in the rivers increased dramatically due to lowering the water level. In addition, it has also been found that the extent and intensity of algal bloom and dissolved oxygen (DO) deficiency is reduced. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive way to assess changes in self-purification capacity of the rivers by opening the weirs. Self-purification capacity is essential and important for the river to recover and maintain its existing condition. Therefore, it is necessary to study self-purification ability evaluation according to weir opening, considering physical, chemical, and biological factors comprehensively. In this study, we developed a simple water quality model (DynCSTR) based on the mass balance theory to evaluate the impacts according to the river environment change and applied it. The DynCSTR model assumes a completely mixed state of water body, thus, there is a limit when the spatial variability of hydrodynamic characteristics and water quality is large. We simulated the change of the self-purification capacity for two scenarios; before (management water level) and after (the lowest water level) opening the weirs. The self-purification coefficient (ka/kd), ... 전체 초록 보기
