With the comparison of the metaphorical extensions of sohwahata ‘digest’ in Korean and its corresponding word digest in English, Yang and Choi (2023) support Kövecses who argues that cultural variation of metaphorical conceptualization is observed in how different elements of a source domain are highlighted. What they observe through the comparison between Korean and English is that the concept DIGEST in the two languages diverges in the metaphorical extensions, depending on which stages of digestion is highlighted. While Korean sohwahata highlights more on the after-digestion stage where what is absorbed turns into energy and become parts of one’s body, English digest highlights more on the stage of nutrient extraction. Based on the findings of Yang and Choi (2023), this paper observes the metaphorical extension of the same concept DIGEST in Korean Sign Language and compares the extended meanings with those of the spoken languages. The result reveals that DIGEST in KSL extends its meaning highlighting on different stages from the two spoken languages. DIGEST in KSL restricts its meaning extensions only to the active stage and to the after-digestion stage of digestion. The meaning extension is also restricted to the cognitive domain where ideas and information are cognitively processed, as if food is processed in our bodies.
