The structures of “V-Sha-(O)” and “V-Si-(O)” in SouShenJi embody the characteristics of the times, both syntactically and semantically. The semantic relationship of “behavior-result” and the syntactic relationship of “action before-result after” satisfy the syntactic and semantic requirements of Chinese Complement grammaticalization.
The semantic and grammatical properties of “Sha” and “Si” are different, so the grammaticalization approach and progress of “V-Sha” and “V-Si” structures are also different. The quantity of “V-Sha-O” structure with object is similar to the “V-Si” structure without object in SouShenJi. But the syntax and semantics of “V-Sha-O” structure are relatively mature than that of “V-Si” structure, the grammatical environment of “V-Sha-O” structure is more stable too. The extensive use of “V-Si” structure is related to the semantic characteristics and grammaticalization degree of “Si”. Therefore, the idea that the Verb-Complement-Object structure “V-Sha-O” is formed by assimilation of “V-Si-O” remains to be further investigated.
