The subaltern, defined within a political or cultural category, is outside or located below a specific space or place. The de-privileging of the human subject, which has been constantly argued within the concept of postmodernism, tends to decenter the subject as the other established by the colonial subject, but this de-privileging and decentralization is only the deconstruction of the subject as a humanistic concept established by Euro-centrism, and it is still defined as the other in the space that experienced colonialism. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the subaltern, who symbolized the so-called “unexpressed voice” in the colonial process as the subject of the historical experience of colonialism and resistance to it, is silenced by the dominant discourse, and how the actual experience of the subaltern is reproduced as a method of resistance against the silence. From the perspective, I will examine the correlation between Ireland and the subaltern in the texts of William Butler Yeats and Seamus Heaney, and how the representation of the two poets’ opposing subalterns reconstructs the space and identity of the colonized.
