This study critically analyzed how Hangeul consonants and vowels are taught when Korean is taught as a foreign language and proposed a new educational order and methods based on the principles of Hunminjeongeum. To determine the effectiveness of the proposed methods, foreign Korean learners were divided into two groups: one group educated based on the principles of Hunminjeongeum and one group educated based on the Unified Korean Spelling System. They received six weeks of instruction in consonants and vowels after which they took a test on consonants and vowels and a learner perception survey.
For the vowel education sequence, the basic elements ‘ㆍ, ㅡ, ㅣ’ were presented based on the concept of Cheonjiin (heaven, earth, and humanity) and the vowels were presented in the order of ‘ㅡ, ㅣ, ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅐ, ㅔ’. The diphthongs were arranged according to their systematic relationships with the monophthongs and presented in the order of ‘ㅛ, ㅠ, ㅑ, ㅕ, ㅒ, ㅖ’ and ‘ㅘ, ㅝ, ㅙ, ㅞ, ㅚ, ㅟ, ㅢ’. The consonant sequence, which was based on how they are formed with the vocal organs and articulated, was ‘ㅇ, ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅅ, ㅈ, ㅁ, ㅂ’, ‘ㅎ, ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅊ, ㅍ’ and ‘ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅆ, ㅉ, ㅃ.’
The group educated according to the principles ofHunminjeongeum scored higher in both the test on consonants and vowels and the perception survey than the group taught using the Unified Korean Spelling System (p < 0.001).
This study was significant in that it established the validity of teaching Hangeul consonants and vowels according to the scientific and systematic principles of Hunminjeongeum.
