Recent advancement of genetic manipulation in mice has enabled us to generate transgenic and knockout mice to understand human health and overcome diseases. To find out subtle and important gene functions using these models, the mice must be of high-genetic quality and associated with standardized phenotypic data. Since 2002, RIKEN BRC (www.brc.riken.jp/lab/animal/en/) has been designated as the core facility of mouse resources by the National BioResource Project (NBRP) of MEXT, Japan. With strong support from scientific community, we have collected over 4,555 mouse strains mainly developed in Japan including various transgenic, knockout, and conditional knockout mice. It is not necessarily easy to keep these genetically-modified strains with high-quality that meets both scientific and legal requirements.
