초록·키워드
The purpose of this study is to analyze the growth indices of Korean banks before(1994-1997)and after(1998-2001) the IMF supervision system. The changed ratio of the growth indices(deposits, loans, total assets, number of branches, total capital, and net profits for 7 years(1994-2001) are empirically measured and compared between two periods. And to measure the trend change before and after the IMF supervision system, the results of t-test were shown. The main empirical results are as follows. First, the changed ratio of deposits, loans, total assets, and branches of city banks and regional banks records minus sign, and those of total capital and net profit show plus sign. Second, Hana Bank, Shinhan Bank, and Jeonbuk Bank have shown the steady and sound growth. Third, the effect of compulsory bank M&As by Korean government on June 1998 has shown the positive effects in terms of net profits and total capital indices. Fourth, the results of 6 hypotheses for ratio change analysis were rejected. Fifth, when we measure t-test, the significant differences were shown before and after the IMF supervision system as follows: all banks(deposits, loans, total assets, and branch), the nationwide banks(deposits), local banks(deposits, loans, total assets, and branch), non-merger banks(deposits, loans, total assets, and branch). The important policy implication of this study is that Financial Supervisory Service should ask individual bank to adopt the growth indices for building up their competition power. Individual bank should follow the growth strategy of the good quality banks for improving their growth rate.
