Metal cyanide complexes, Cu(CN)x1-x and Zn(CN)x2-x, in electroplating wastewater were electrochemically treated by using a pilot-plant scale electrolyzer. Cyanide ions were decomposed at the β-PbO2/Ti anode and metallic ions were electrodeposited on the stainless steel cathode. Decomposition efficiency of cyanides was higher for Zn(CN)x2-x than for Cu(CN)x1-x, and the difference is related to the formation constant of the cyanides. However, the decomposition efficiency decreased sharply as the concentration of CN- is reduced. The optimum decomposition current density was 5A/dm2 when the concentration of CN- is higher than 200ppm. In comparison with the chemical treatment which used NaClO as an oxidizing agent, the electrochemical treatment showed a rapid decomposition rate and was more economical. Furthermore, electrochemical treatment does not need an additional step required for the removal of precipitated metal hydroxides in chemical treatment.
