High speed signal transients related with signal integrity such as signal degradation, crosstalk, dispersion, and simultaneous switching noises (reference potential fluctuation) of high density and high speed VLSI circuit interconnects are presented. The effect of signal loss, dispersion, crosstalk, and simultaneous switching of VLSI interconnects have been investigated using frequency variant transmission line parameters. To characterize the accurate signal variation on lossy interconnects, mathematical analysis of multiconductor system were employed. Introducing the limitations and deficiencies of simulation and Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, existing interconnect models are compared. Particularly, it is demonstrated with the worst case crosstalk model that the deep-submicron-based VLSI system may be catastrophic due only to crosstalk. Unlike the conventional circuit designs, high speed and high density circuit designs without guaranteeing the signal integrity in the early design stage result in intermittently disastrous circuit failures. With this work, the signal integrity problems which are pretty important for high performance VLSI circuit design can be predicted in the early phase of circuit design.
