In order to handle the burst packet traffics between the ISDN nodes, it will become indispensable to formulate the high throughput backbone network. In this paper, we suggest the modified Frame Relay as a backbone interface and design the internodal protocol to achieve the reliable end-to-end message transfer in the ISDN packet switching backbone. Suggested ISDN packet switching backbone can handle the wide range of internal traffics from 56Kbps to 45Mbps, and perform the error-free end-to-end connection minimizing the protocol conversion overheads. As a design example of the ISDN packet switching backbone, we describe the ISDN Packet Backbone Network (IPBN) for the TDX-10 ISDN switching system.
