As the number of automotives is rapidly increasing recently throughout the world, many countries are enforcing the allowable levels of exhaust emission and fuel consumption in order to protect the global environment from pollution. Furthermore consumers require vehicles to be more convenient, comfortable, and safe. To meet these demands, a fine engine control, above all things, is essential. An electronic engine control system(EECS) becomes possible due to the recent great enhancement of semiconductor and electronic control techniques. The objectives of electronic engine control system is to provide the needed accuracy and adaptability in order to minimize exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, provide the optimal driveability for all operating conditions, and provide the self diagnosis when malfunctions occur.
The recent trend of the EECS is that the number of functions to be realized is increasing rapidly and the size of the control unit is decreasing. In order to develop this EECS, the necessary development techniques according to the functions, the development method and process, and kinds of tasks to do will be presented here.
