Renewed interest in urban express rail in Korea has led to a close examination of the magnitude of travel time reduction associated with developing such systems. Introduction of express rail may be perceived as a time saving incentive for trip makers in urban area. No effort has been made to predict time saving benefits accuring from implementation of urban express rail.
Emprical analysis was carried out in this study on subway line #3 in seoul in an effort to assess the the amount of travel time reduction. The operating and waiting time were included in evaluating overall time differences between existing and express rail systems. The results of the analysis reveals that as much as 8,356hours per days can be saved by introducting express rail systems.
