Recently, a fairly diverse macrofauna, including a new species of molluscan genus Costipelagiella (sensu Bischoff, 1990) and echinoderms, together with trilobites, conodonts, inarticulate brachiopods, hyolithids, and problematic fossils, was first recovered from the limestone interbeds within the lower part of the Machari Formation, northwestern Yeongweol area. The layers are regarded as a part of the Middle-Upper Cambrian passage zone which lay ca. 23 m above the base of the formation. The fossiliferous beds are interpreted to have formed in the Late Cambrian in age, considering the occurrence of the species, and Leijopyge armata (Linna- rson, 1869).
