This study is intended to investigate the origin of organic matter and it's evolutionary changes during burial in the Neogene Yeonil Group of the Pohang basin. The organic matter from the Yeonil Group of the Pohang basin is predominantly autochthonous in origin. The content of terrestrial input is generally minor and tends to be increasing toward the western updip margin of the basin. Optical observations and chemical analyses show that the kerogen can be correlated to the type II organic matter from Toarcian shales in the Paris basin. The Yeonil Group is relatively rich in organic matter which is suitable for liquid hydrocarbon generation. But the organic matter remains in the immature stage of thermal evolution because burial depth is not sufficient even in the deep section of the basin.
