The Soonchang Shear Zone in the Hwasun coalfield area has been studied. Mylonitic belts in Precambrian granitic gneiss occurred at the eastern border of the Upper Paleozoic meta-sedimentary rocks and display the width ranging from several meters to 700 m. The trend of shear zone is N 0°-45°E and subvertical mylonitic foliations with subhorizontal stretching lineations indicate that ductile strike-slip movement was dominant. An amount of displacement across the shear zone in granitic gneiss is more than 3 km. Foliation trajectory patterns correspond to the discrete ductile shear zone and locally half of the continuous one. Non-coaxial strain history with dextral shear is evidenced by strain heterogeneities and asymmetrical structures such as progressive rotation of generated foliations, porphyroclast systems, S/C-fabrics, obliquity of dynamically recrystallized grains and displaced broken grains. The observed finite strain features are attributed to a progressive deformation process combined simple shear with accompanying volume loss and additional pure shear. Probably ductile shearing deformation occurred under the metamorphic condition of greenschist facies during late Triassic to middle Jurassic period, but the exact age of the shearing event is not certain yet.
