Three pieces of native copper bearing basaltic rocks recovered from the INGA #1 well, about 3,400m below the sea level, of the 2nd Block in the Continental Shelf, Yellow Sea, South Korea were dated by K-Ar whole rock method. Relatively fresh rocks give ages of about 110 Ma, and extremely altered rocks give ages of about 80 Ma. These basaltic rocks could be correlated with the basaltic rocks of Osipbong member in the Yeongyang Basin of Cretaceous time, in terms of their petrology and geochronology. The age data and thickness of the Tertiary sedimentary rocks indicate that the time-averaged subsidence rate of the basin during the Cenozoic was about 54-56 m/Ma, if the basin was formed from the Eocene up to present, but the basin was more rapidly subsided from the Eocene to the Oligocene with a subsidence rate of about 73-84 m/Ma.
