A research on “An Internet-based Mobile Robot-Control Architecture” is being done at the Intelligent System Control Research Center. The purpose of this project is to create and to implement a control architecture for a mobile robot via the Internet in online and offline modes. This research is based on the service robot “Issac”, that was developed by our center during the period 2000-2002. The robot is controlled to go around, to record the real time video, audio and other sensor data. The information can be sent back to users directly via the Internet. The robot can also be scheduled to do some tasks, to record that data for playing back later. Users can utilize the Internet to access the mobile robot system and interact with the robot. The architecture supports:
• Recording function: The robot is asked to do something and to report the result when it is done.
• Offline working mode: Tasks for the robot are scheduled when the connection is up and the robot does what have been scheduled when the connection is lost.
• Haptic device control: Using the haptic device to control the mobile robot
In this paper, we will introduce an architecture that satisfies some of the requirements. Some technology selection is discussed and some experiments are carried out to support the architecture validation.
