The modern soil survey in China began in 1930s, when the China Geological Survey established its soil science division. The publication of “Soil Geography of China” in 1936 by J. Thorp promoted the spreading of soil science in China and brought in modern Marbut soil classification concepts. Several regional reconnaissance soil survey activities in various typical zones were conducted, which imporved the understanding of soil formation and soil distribution in China, especially on paddy soils and subtropical soils. More regional soil surveys and soil mapping appeared since 1950s. The first nationwide agricultural soil survey, which foused on cultivated land, made clear about the main types and basic soil fertility of agricultural soils. Meanwhile, some special regional soil survey programmes were conducted, for example the tropical soil survey for rubber plantation, the arable land survey in northeast China, which helped a lot to the development of regional agriculture.
