Metal Forming is a manufacturing technology which evolved in thousands of years. In the course of time numerous paradigm shifts have occurred, such as mechanization, electrification and automation which have changed the image of metal forming significantly. In the recent past the influence of the information technology have shown unmistakably; metal forming has changed from an empirical manufacturing technology towards a high-tech key technology in production. In the first part of the article developments from this last stage will be presented which had fundamental influence on processes and products. In the second part the forecast of significant trends for metal forming will be attempted on the basis of two drastic changes, the further rapid growth of the world population and the knowledge and information explosion.
