In recent times, the conservative protestant churches in Korea have been growing bigger than their liberal counterparts, partially because their church ministers and leaders have been more skillful in controlling their congregations by using various methods. Many different forms of “educational programs” have been designed to rear “good” and “obedient” believers. Serving this purpose, church education has been “oppressive” and “manipulating.” The ideal church that many church ministers implicitly and explicitly want to have might be one that is populated by “Peter Pans” who refuse to grow. What significance would Freire’s education as a liberation method have for this sort of educational situation that I have observed in Korean churches? This paper addresses this matter against my recent reading of Freire. It is my contention that by applying Freire’s philosophy and education, Christian oriented general education could provide church leaders and students with the possibility of discourse by nurturing a problem-posing model of education against a banking model of education.
