When Buddhism, a foreign religion, first took root in China and began to spread, ithad to make compromises with Confucianism and Daoism, two traditional Chineseschools of thought, in order to gain support from the ruling class and the general public.
Beginning with translations of Buddhist sūtras by An Shigao 安世高 (fl. ca. 148–180)and Lokakṣema (Zhi Loujiachen 支婁迦讖, b. 147), Buddhist thought gradually spreadin China through translations of biographies of the Buddha and Mahāyāna sūtras.
Buddhist intellectuals naturally wanted to understand the teachings of Buddhismbetter and raised questions about many ethical and ideological issues. The “Mouzi lihuolun” (Master Mou’s Treatise on Settling Doubts) is a treatise composed by Mouzi (b.170)who tried to answer some of these questions. The book vividly depicts the debate amongproponents of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism beginning with the introductionof Buddhism in China in the Six Dynasties period (220–589). It shows howheterogeneous viewpoints from different historical and cultural backgrounds interactedwith each other. Although some of Mouzi’s questionable arguments and forced logicare in disagreement with original Indian Buddhism, we should admit that Buddhismfinally became ‘Sinicized’ through such innumerable distortions and modifications.
