The mean trophic level (MTL) or marine trophic index (MTI) of landings of a specific area is one of important indicators for inferring to fishing down marine food web phenomenon (Pauly et al., 1998; 2002). When the large fish at the top of the food web are fished out, fisheries go after the smaller fish and invertebrates at lower levels in the food web. The decline in marine food webs, if any, in the MTL over the years is considered as “fishing down the marine food web (FDMW)” (Bhathal and Pauly, 2008), that potentially alters trophic flows in an ecosystem (Pauly et al., 1998; Link and Garrison, 2002). The assumption is that by estimating the MTL of catch, other alterations such as state change in MTL of ecosystem and biodiversity can also be revealed (Pauly et al., 1998; Pauly and Watson, 2005). The trophic levels of fisheries resources in the catches from Korean waters showed a significant decreasing trend from 1967 to 2017. Mean trophic levels ranged from 3.41 to 3.55 during the last four-decades in Korean waters. The trophic levels of fisheries resources in the catches from the East Sea showed a significant decreasing trend from 1967 to 2017. Mean trophic levels in the East Sea ranged from 3.41 to 3.65 during the last four-decades. The mean trophic level increased after mid-1970s mainly due to the increase of other semi-demerals, such as Walleye pollock, catch and then declined substantiall ... 전체 초록 보기
