From the fact that most of ESS in Korea are foreign products, three features stand for the current environment of software maintenance. First, it is the separation between software developers and maintainers and secondly, because of the lack of development technologies, tools, and documents, software should be changed based upon source program lists which are in the level of assembly language. The last one is the maintenance structure of dual maintainers. Therefore as preparatory considerations for determining the high cost areas of software maintenance cost and efficient management of ESS software maintenance, this paper analyzes 2 years of empirical data and definitely determines the types and trends of ESS software maintenance, from the viewpoints of software configuration management, change control, and communications, in case of M10CN, No.1A, and AXE-10. language without any auxiliary tools. The last is that the maintenance is carried out by two separate organizations. The software change proposal is submitted by an exchange supplier which makes use of the technology learned from developers and the acceptance test for the software change proposal is carried out by an operating company. This results in a complicated maintenance procedure. In addition, the long maintenance period of ESS and its high cost raise the specific problems related to the management of ESS. Agresti claims that long-term maintenance must be managed explicitly to be effective[2]. Hamlet also describes that unplanned and undocumented "emergency maintenance" is very harmful to the software maintenance[3]. To cope with these, current status and future directions are to be established definitely and then an attempt to improve the maintenance through efficient processing procedures can be made.
