Transgenic (genetically modified) crops have been increasingly cultivated since their large-scale commercial introduction in 1996. Most of these crops have been modified with traits of agronomic importance, such as herbicide- and insect-resistance, which likely will induce modified pest management practices on these crops. Several organisations have surveyed the use of pesticides on transgenic crops versus conventional crops. Usually, these surveys report results in terms of amounts of pesticides used or monetary cost of pesticides. This, however, does not take the dose-effect relationships into account. An IUPAC project focuses on the assessment of the environmental impact of altered pesticide use in transgenic crops. The goal of this project is to assess the environmental consequences of the reported changes in pesticide use patterns on transgenic crops. This should provide tools for risk-benefit analysis for transgenic crops at the policy level. Environmental impact indicators would be useful for the prediction of the environmental impact associated with the altered pesticide use on transgenic crops. Using the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ), for example, we previously predicted a reduction of the environmental impact of pesticides used on transgenic crops in the USA. Other environmental indicators are also available and the choice for a particular indicator may depend on its applicability as well the desired output. The case of herbicide resistant sugar- and fodder- beets is highlighted, which offer potential benefits in terms of weed management options and biodiversity.
