Kim, Kyu-hyun. 1999. Other-initiated repair sequences in Korean conversation: types and functions. Discourse and Cognition 6.2, 141-168. This study examines the structural and functional characteristics of Korean other-initiated repair sequences initiated by various types of next-turn repair initiators (NTRIs), which include ney?/ung?, mwe?, questioning repeat, candidate understanding, and doubles. The analysis shows the generic and systematic ways of addressing problems in conversation in terms of how repair is organized and responded to. It also examines some of the special actions performed by NTRIs such as displaying shifted orientation, projecting a disagreement, or offering collaboration. Special reference is made to how participants orient themselves to the topical and sequential implicativeness of the trouble-source turn and presuppose a high degree of intersubjectivity in the context of resuming the host sequence. The findings confirm in general the robustness of some of the generic organizational features of system constraints impinging upon Korean repair organization. They also point to some aspects of the culture-specific ways in which members engage in repair practice geared to particular modes of addressing problems and managing intersubjectivity.
