The farming status of Korean native oriental honeybee and the quality of honey produced from the 5 areas (Sanne, Namwon; Toji, Gurye; Cheongam, Hadong; Shicheon, Sancheong; Macheon, Hamyang) around Jiri Mountain was investigated. The Korean native oriental honeybee cultured around Jiri Mountain was 122,470 colonies which corresponded to 33% of total oriental honeybee colonies cultured in Korea. In the 5 areas around Jiri Mountain, 54,504 colonies of oriental honeybee were cultured in 1,259 farm households, which corresponded 45% of native honeybee colonies cultured and 31% of the number of agricultural farm household in the area, respectively. Honey samples collected from 5 farms of each 5 areas were inspected for quality. Only 7 of the 25 honey samples, comprising 28%, was adequate for the Korea Beekeeping Association's quality standard of honey. The most lacking parameter from the standard was the content of invert sugar, following sucrose content. In most cases, the contents of moisture, ash and HMF were adequate for the standard. Mean values of invert sugar and sucrose were higher in honey of the 5 areas than those of other area. Among the honey from the 5 areas, those of Sanne were lowest in invert sugar and highest in sucrose. The pH and color of the honey from the 5 areas were not very different, while total acidity and flavonoid contents were different each other. Considering the contents of total acidity and flavonoid, the honey produced from the native honeybee in the areas of Jiri Mountain may deserve to be raised as a functional food.
