Effective Drought Index (EDI) and change-point analysis have revealed two characteristics of summer drought in Korea. First, summer drought has been mitigated since 1997, and second, this weakness is related to an increase in spring sea ice in the North Pacific region. When sea ice in the North Pacific during spring is greater than usual, the cold flow moving south from the North Pacific increases. Because of this, air temperature and sea surface temperature anomalies become negative in the region of East Asia. If this situation continues to summer, summer drought occurs. In this case, western north Pacific high becomes weakened, and thus summer monsoon does not develop in East Asia, and the tropical cyclone (TC) track changes, thereby the frequency of its reaching the Korean Peninsula decreases.
